PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG) – Chemistry can be a scary subject for students, but one summer camp is hoping to change that. In this week’s Summertime Learning, we take a look at FSU Panama City’s Edible Chemistry Camp.
Elementary students learned all about science at Edible Chemistry Camp. (WJHG)
Elementary school students got in touch with their inner scientist and chef at this camp.
“We came up with lots of different activities to try and explore food, molecular structures, chemical and physical changes with kids in a way that was safe and scientifically accurate and a lot of fun for them, and hopefully tastes good at the end,” Camp Coordinator Amanda Walker said.
Each day has a new theme. Campers get to learn all about food and chemistry by making tacos, pancakes, and ice cream.
“I really like cooking and I help my family cook a lot and I love chemistry, so I thought it would be a lot of fun,” Camper Elizabeth Spiba said.
Science can be a scary subject for many kids, but this camp makes learning chemistry fun.
“They think it’s something they can’t do or it’s too scientific when really it’s not. It’s just us playing with our food and making things taste good by combining lots of different science concepts,” Walker said
“I didn’t know it had that much chemistry, like science stuff included in it. I thought it was just like you mix ingredients together and then make the stuff,” Camper Roger Coulther said.
These tiny chefs can now take home a recipe for science.
FSU Panama City will have STEM camps throughout the summer for elementary school students. The next camp is called Math Escape.
